President’s Notes May 2024

President’s Notes   May 2024

President’s Notes: We still need a nominee for 2nd Vice President. This is an excellent way to learn how the Chapter works and to ease yourself into helping run it. We also need a Newsletter Editor, a Photographer, and a ROTC/JROTC Liaison. Please get in touch with me if you are interested.

Text Box: I want to thank everyone who helped make the ROTC/JROTC Awards and Recognition Banquet on 25 April such a success, especially Tom Luczynski, Tom Harnden, Dan O’Connell, Lynda Farkas, Jack Harig, and Don Bratton.   We had a great turnout, and, as always, talking with the high school and college students reinforced our confidence in the youth of America. We had a chance to spend some time with some outstanding students and their teachers.

In March, I asked the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland to provide us with a guest speaker for our May 16 meeting. The topic is “How NASA is continuing its deep space exploration and what NASA’s plans were to establish a permanent moon base.
We lucked out and NASA sent Lindsay Kaldon a former USAF Captain EW Officer, and a real-life nuclear engineer and scientist.  She is the project manager for the NASA team building a nuclear reactor that will be the power source for a permanent US base on the Moon and Mars. Her explanation of how her team is building a safe efficient nuclear reactor was very interesting, and very educational for us. She works at Glenn Research Center and has offered to arrange a tour of the facility.  We have open dates in June and September so I will be talking with her!
We had 16 members in attendance, and this highlights the reason we need a chapter photographer.  We need someone to focus on photographing and preserving our events.  Please consider this.  You do not need special training or a dedicated camera.  If you have a camera on your phone, that is more than adequate.
