OWRC 2025 July and August President’s Notes

From our 25 June Meeting, here is a condensed version and from our Chapter Quarterly Board Meeting 15 July at the Summit County VSC, 14:00.

We covered the successful picnic at Andy’s on 12 July.  Scheduled for Sunday August 17 is the Annual Steak, Corn and Chicken Roast at the Tadmoor Shrine facility, 3000 Krebs Ave, Akron, starting at  13:00. We covered duties, and participants A-L are to bring a side dish, and M-Z to bring a dessert.

The book on Non-Hostile deaths by John Walker has been reviewed and awaiting his return to get the notes to it.

The Ohio Council of Chapters has sent a budget request to the member chapters. And I am looking into that.

The NDAA has been passed, and it looks like the military is going to do well.

I attended two JROTC graduation functions, and six of  our members attended the Memorial Day celebration in Bath.

For August I plan on an outing to the Northern Ohio Railway Museum, 5515 Buffham Road, Seville OH.  PH 330-769-5501. They offer a museum, a movie (46 minutes) and a trolley ride. Cost is $7 per person. The trolleys run every 30 minutes on a closed loop track. So you can see and feel what your grandparents experienced in the day. There is one trolley equipped for ADA guests. Afterwards we can split up for lunch. In town is the El Patron Mexican restaurant 101 Greenwich Road. Or we can get back on I-76 and go to the Galaxy about 15 minutes away.

We discussed the Guitars for Vets request from the VSC.  They have veterans with PTSD learn how to play a guitar for therapy. It costs about $200 to equip one vet and have the vet go through the music classes. We discussed adding this to the form when you pay your annual chapter fee and donate to the three charities we support (Ronald McDonald house, Stand Down and the Fisher House). More on this later.

We sent a check to the local Boy Scout Council in memory of Col Arthur Wallach, a former member who was active in scouting.

There is a new program called Cheddar Up, where you can pay your chapter dues and other items at the national website. We are not there yet – other chapters are ahead of us.

See you at the 30 July meeting at Michael’s A.M.

Veterans who passed away/ will pass from July 2025 to  October 2026 AND received/are receiving  VA-provided home hospice care can now get full VA burial allowances. Do YOU know of any veteran who is getting VA home hospice care?  TELL THEM!

As you read this, we are approaching our annual August Steak, Chicken and Corn Roast on Sunday 17 August. Sign up online for what meal you want, pay for that,  and bring the appropriate side dish based on the first letter of your last name.

Since we have to know how many people are coming, and what they want, we have to buy the meats, etc. ahead of time.

SO, if you think you can walk in and get a meal like a restaurant, I suggest you GO to a restaurant,  Thanks.

Of far-reaching changes, we can now accept gifts as a non-profit. The donors now get to deduct the value on their income tax return. So I need ideas on who we should contact, should it be goods or cash, etc.

At the Ohio Council of Chapters meeting on 19 July, we discussed this and a generic gift form letter has been received.

Chapter outing on August 9th, Saturday, at the Northern Ohio Railway Museum, 5515 Buffham Road, Seville OH.  $7 entry fee. Museum, movie of 46 minutes, and trolley rides! Lunch at two possible locations.

On September 6th, Saturday, we have the Aeronautics and Engineer Expo, at the Kent Sate Airport. $5 per person. Max $20 per family. $20 parking fee – cash.  Boy Scouts Pancake Breakfast from 09:00 to 11:00.  $8 adults, $5 kids 5-11, under 5 free. Bring the correct cash, please.

Also many other vendors in their food trucks. 10:00 to 16:00. Oh, and lots of airplanes. AND you can “fly” in one of the simulators. I expect that to cause long lines. You can look this up online

To end this missive, Wednesday 27 August  will be our MONTHLY meeting.

Respectfuilly.

William Maki

OWRC President
