George P. Manos Ltc Ret

manosGeorge P. Manos, Retired Army Lt Col died on May 20, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jeanette; also survived by his son, Paul (Betsy) Manos, and his two daughters, Carolyn (Mike) Plevris, and Elena (David) Prohaska; He adored his six grandchildren, Brandon, Andrew, Alexia, James, Maximos, and Genevieve. A graduate of the University of Akron, George served as President of both the Alumni Chapter and the Active Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity. He began his career as an Investment Advisor at the Akron Offices of NI Securities and Merrill Lynch. He later became the Purchasing Agent for the Akron Public Schools and the City of Akron.

A very proud American, George began his 34-year military career by being activated by the Naval Reserve during the Korean War, then he transferred to the Army Combat Engineers. He graduated from the University of Akron Army ROTC Program, the Army Infantry School, the Army Military Intelligence School, and the Army Command and Staff College. During that time, he served as an Infantry Platoon Leader with the 3rd Infantry Div., the 101st Air Assault Div., the Ohio National Guard, Intelligence Staff Officer at the Norfolk Naval Base, Industrial Security Investigator at the Defense Dept. in Columbus, and an Intelligence Staff Officer at Fort Holabird in Baltimore. He concluded his military career as a Foreign Area Staff Officer at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

George’s involvements included the Reserve Officer’s Association, Ahepa Chapter President, Copley American Legion, and the Association of the U.S. Army. He dedicated time to the VFW Honor Guard conducting Military services for hundreds of deceased soldiers. He also was the Military Outreach Coordinator of the ESGR.As a lifetime member of the Akron Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, he was a member of the Good Samaritans and the male chorus group. George was a very active 84-year old who loved walking each day with his wife, swimming laps, reading, and traveling.

Funeral service Friday, May 26 in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S Union St., Akron, Ohio at 11 a.m. Interment Rose Hill Burial Park

Family will receive friends Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. in the Walters Funeral Home at Rose Hill, 3653 W Market St., Akron, Ohio. Trisagion Service at 5 p.
