Lt Cdr Oliver J Schneider

Oliver J. Schneider, 91, of Brimfield Township, died Saturday, July 1, 2017, at home in Brimfield Township.

He was born January 31, 1926 in Ravenna, OH to the late Frank and Margaret (nee Trepanier) Schneider. Graduate of Ravenna High School, Bachelor degree from Kent State University and Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Case Western Reserve University Law School.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and retired Lt. Commander from the U.S. Naval Reserve (Judge Advocate General). He served on a minesweeper during World War II in the Pacific theater, and on a destroyer-minesweeper with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea during the Korean War.

He was a practicing attorney in Ravenna for over 50 years. He served four years as a special Agent with the U.S. Naval Intelligence in Cleveland and the 4th Naval District in Philadelphia. He served three years as Prosecutor of the Ravenna Municipal Court. He was a partner in the law firm of Davis, McCelland & Schneider before going into practice for himself in 1974. He was licensed to practice law before all Ohio courts, U.S. District Court, U.S. Court of Military Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was past president of the Portage County Bar Association. He served as Special Counsel for the Attorney General of Ohio for Kent State University for 13 years.

He was a past member of the Portage County Board of Education for 24 years, Ravenna City Board of Health for 12 years, and the Board of Trustees of Portage-Geauga Juvenile and Rehabilitation Center.

He was a life member of the Varsity “K” Club of Kent State University.

O.J. and his wife enjoyed traveling which included the Soviet Union, Australia, New Zealand, Morocco, Finland, Costa Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

He is survived by his wife, Joann C. (Pickens) Schneider, whom he married on August 6, 1949; son, O.J. “Jack” (Barb) Schneider Jr. of Kent; daughters, Ruth (David) Alger of Ravenna, Barbara Travis of Kent, and Susan (Jim) Underwood of Kent; Nine grandchildren; Nineteen great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Haas. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Schneider, mother, Margaret (nee Trepanier) Schneider, brothers, Herbert F. Schneider, Leo A. Schneider, Louis Schneider, and Wilbur Schneider, and sister, Marie C. Adams.

Calling hours will be held 5-7 PM Wednesday, July 5th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, July 6th at Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna with Father William B. Kraynak officiating. Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
